Poland 2050 - coal and low carbon economy
dodano: 2013-02-20
On 14 February 2013 a conference: Poland 2050 - coal and low carbon economy was organised in Warsaw. Conference provided an opportunity for discussing the costs and benefits for Poland resulting from the country’s transition to the low carbon economy by 2050 as well as the real costs of the coal-based energy sector in Poland.
Presentations opening two panels of the conference were delivered by:
  • Michał Wilczyński, PhD, former Main State Geologist,
  • Iwo Łoś, Greenpeace Poland,
  • Paulina Miśkiewicz, PhD and Associate Professor Michał Krzyżanowsk, WHO Poland,
  • Maciej Bukowski, PhD, Institute for Structural Research,
  • Tomasz Terlecki, European Climate Foundation.

The presentations are available at “conference materials”.

Following key panellists took part in the discussion:
  • Irena Pichola, PwC Poland,
  • Zbigniew Kamieński, Ministry of Economy,
  • Wacław Czerkawski, Vice President of the Miners Trade Union,
  • Przemysław Kalinka, Ministry of Regional Development,
  • Dariusz Szwed, Green Institute,
  • Associate Professor Renata Złotkowska, Head of the Institute for Environmental Health, Department of Public Health, Medical University of Silesia,
  • Prof. Tomasz Żylicz, Founder of the Warsaw Ecological Economics Center (WOEE), Dean of the Department of Economical Sciences, Warsaw University,
  • Radosław Gawlik, President of the Ecological Association Eko-Unia, vice-chairman of the All-Poland Coalition "Development YES - Open-pit Mining NO"

Each long term forecast possesses a large risk margin, as the world may be a completely different place in several decades. What is technologically impossible now and constitutes a barrier may cease being a problem. What is easily available now, may become a good that is difficult to obtain.

Nevertheless, long term forecasts constitute an important measure supporting decision making processes, as they allow for defining not only the current costs but also the benefits resulting from a certain choice. They also reduce the risk of negative long term impacts.

The conference provided an opportunity for presenting development scenarios, among other things from the report Low Carbon Poland 2050. They answer the questions about possible costs and benefits of the transition to the low carbon economy.
